My first encounter with martial arts was an Okinawan form of karate called Shorin-ryu. I didn't stay with it long. Being 15 at the time, I was turned off by what I considered to be a militaristic attitude. With time, I've become more comfortable with my own power and my view of the martial arts has matured. I now view the martial arts as a wonderful way to strengthen the archetypal warrior in each of us. A psychological and energetic aspect that is primarily about integrity, standing on our own two feet, and claiming our personal power.
I first began studying Tai Chi Chuan in college. I saw it then, as I still do now, as a way to strengthen the body, the mind, and the spirit without the need for overt combative or competitive qualities. In 2003, I began studying tai chi diligently with as many teachers and in as many styles and forms for which I could find the time.
During this period of exploration, I was introduced to the Wu Style and the teaching of Taoist Lineage Master Bruce Kumar Frantzis. I've found Bruces' knowledge, skill, and ability to impart complex and esoteric tai chi principles to be direct, palpable and without measure. I believe the Wu Style to be an exceptionally gentle and effective way of maintaining health, accessing one's chi and developing a sense of calm inner balance. Having experienced these benefits of tai chi first hand, I completed my Wu Style Short Form instructor training with Master Frantzis in order to share these benefits with others and strengthen the inner warrior in us all.
