Ben Luskin

Growing up along-side a brother on the autism spectrum, Ben was surrounded by individuals living with alternate abilities from an early age. Then his own life took a dramatic turn when he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury at age 12. After struggling to maintain for many years, Ben discovered Indonesian martial arts and found renewed belief in his potential. Largely due to these experiences, Ben has come to understand “disabilities” as strengths, upon which fulfilling lifestyles may be constructed. As a means for sharing this message with others, Ben became a certified professional Life Coach through the Baraka institute in Portland. He currently offers Life Coaching and mentoring for individuals living with brain injuries, trauma recovery, and other challenges. Along with his work, he volunteers his time and energy to the cross-disability community’s movement for positive change within the healthcare system.

Ben credits martial arts with having provided him with the inspiration, knowledge, and skills he needed to confront and surpass life’s challenges. Presently, he trains with his teacher Nathan Branning in Sun Moo Do, a Korean form of martial arts rooted in Zen philosophy. He dreams of opening a martial arts school in which individuals of mixed abilities can train together, learning from each others’ unique strengths.
